Pheasants Hill Old Byre was once one of the cow barns of Pheasants Hill Farm, and is nestled adjacent to the owners’ home. The farm buildings date from the mid-18th century and comprise a traditional brick-and-flint farmhouse, an impressive range of outbuildings - barns, granary and cart shed. Originally belonging to the Hambleden Estate, it ceased being a working farm in 1962 and was purchased by the present owner’s father in 1968. The farm is situated in the renowned Hambleden Valley and lies within the Pheasants Hill Conservation Area, as well as the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and is under the protection of a National Trust covenant.
You will find mementoes of previous generations throughout the property. The owner’s grandfather was a master carver and you will be sleeping in a wonderful carved oak bed that he made for his own wedding in 1902 (but made super-comfortable with a brand new sprung base and orthopaedic mattress). The owner’s father was an artist and nearly all of the paintings and drawings in the property are his work.
The one-acre garden, shared with the owners, is fully enclosed (to keep the deer out). Guests can enjoy their own sitting area, with table and chairs provided. The garden is looked after without the use of pesticides or herbicides and is, in consequence, a haven for wildlife. The wildflower meadow is covered in cowslips in the spring and more than 100 Pyramid Orchids appear in the summer.
The owners are passionate about wildlife and the environment, and will be donating 15% of earnings on the property to local wildlife and conservation charities. Hot water and heating in the property uses electricity solely from renewable resources. Rainwater for the garden is collected in a large underground cistern. Shop/tea room and pub/restaurant ½ mile.
