Waitby School was built on Waitby Fell in 1680 by James Highmore, a local to the area, for the children of Waitby and Smardale. About a mile and a half west of Kirkby Stephen, Waitby is said to have been an ancient market town, with a castle, chapel and cemetery, but no trace of either is now to be seen. However, the school remains, standing proud on the fellside and, having been purchased recently by another local family, has been lovingly restored, in conjunction with English Heritage, to offer luxurious holiday accommodation.  The property stands alone and enjoys uninterrupted views over the surrounding countryside, dotted with livestock and the occasional farmer and tractor at "doin up time".
Many original features have been retained in the restoration of the School, including wood panelling, wooden double doors, the outside boys lavatory, complete with seat, and, of course, the school bell. After much careful planning, these characterful features have been successfully combined with state of the art fixtures and fittings to create and individual holiday home of great distinction, and a most unique holiday experience.

The description and pictures of this cottage do not begin to reflect the beauty and energy of this property. The equipment, the finishing, the preparation and everything is just first class it does not feel like a rental property but that you have borrowed someone's pride and joy. WE had a lovely long weekend and we will return for a longer stay in the future. If peace and quiet, great countryside, lovely walks and great local hospitality is what you are looking for you cannot beat Waitby School. Now don't you all go booking it so the price goes up and I can never book it again!!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Waitby School. It was absolutely fantastic for the holiday that we wanted. Went with our daughter son in law and grandson of 14 years old. The cottage ( mansion) was lovely, everything our grandson asked for. Very spacious, comfortable, loads of cd’s to watch on the surround system. Each evening we played cards, games etc. Lit the log fire and it was what you imagine a family holiday to be like. It was as the brochure says away from anything that could disturb you, just cows and sheep in the fields at the side of you. Each window had a different view, the hills, and sky were to die for. Also we were lucky enough to have clear night sky’s, the stars were out of this world. Didn’t realise how many stars there are out at night, when you have no street lights. Absolutely amazing! Thank you.
