• About Clock House

The 200 acres of glorious parkland surrounding Mellerstain House, one of Scotland’s grandest stately homes, designed and built by William and Robert Adam, provide a wonderful setting for these two delightful cottages (S4568 & S4569). Visitors are welcome to roam the grounds including the fabulous Italian-style terraced gardens which command panoramic views over the lake to the distant Cheviot Hills. The scenic and historic attractions of the Border country are all close at hand and the beaches of Berwick and Holy Island are also easily accessible. Kelso (6 miles) offers shops, inns and restaurants and is home of Floors Castle and the famous Kelso Horse Races, whilst Edinburgh, with its magnificent castle, museums, galleries and excellent shopping, is only a 35 mile drive. Beautifully appointed and very comfortable, these two properties offer a unique holiday opportunity. Second visit to clock House. Thoroughly enjoyed it. A few cobwebs here and there but we were happy with the overall condition of the house. A word of warning for light sleepers-the house is Very creaky at night, as is the 4 poster bed. Stunning gardens and prefect location for exploring the Borders.

We spent a very enjoyable week in The Clock House. Three of the days we didn't use the car but did walks through the grounds to the Hundy Mundy site with its superb views and other walks nearby. Visits to Melrose and Kelso, as well as a train journey to Edinburgh on the new Waverley Line from Tweedbank Station were also very enjoyable. We walked to the top of the Eildon Hills near Melrose for some truly panoramic views. The house was a very comfortable base. It was a great bonus having the estate lands virtually to ourselves since the house season had just ended. Everybody was very friendly and welcoming. It is just over 80 miles from home but a different world - quiet and peaceful. We would thoroughly recommend it, especially for families who enjoy walking as well as driving.

Very comfortable and housekeeping first class. Good walks for the dog and is handy for visiting various border towns. Only suggestion I would have is for a small table between the two chairs to be able to put your cup of tea (or g&t ) down. Would have been nice for a way to arrange a viewing of the actual clock room. Highly recommended.

This house is in a beautiful location & having free access to the grounds of the main house is superb. We were there during the great storm & the estate staff looked after us well during the power cut. The house was comfortable & warm &, I apart from no dishwasher, has everything needed. It is a little remote from local amenities but that was why we chose it and enjoyed negotiating the narrow roads.

We had a great stay at the Clock House. The cottage was lovely and comfortable but the highlight of the trip was having access to the beautiful grounds. Would definitely recommend.

The Clock House is situated immediately next to the main house of Mellerstain. You enter and exit via the property’s main entrances, so if you have always fancied sweeping down the drive of your stately own home... you are half way there! At least for one week of the year. It is a wonderfully peaceful and idyllic setting. Stroll across the courtyard and you are immediately onto the terrace gardens at the rear of the house. There is no traffic noise, no planes overhead or the like, making it amazingly peaceful. A walk around the lake is a great way to start or end the day. Although you are very much left to yourself, all the staff we met were very friendly. A tour around the house is a must. The cottage is in very good condition; furnished and equipped very nicely. All in all, one of the nicest places we have stayed in.

A very comfortable and restful stay, in a beautiful part of the country, why go abroad when this is available here at home.

We had a superb week at Clock Cottage, helped a lot by the wonderful weather and beautiful surroundings. The cottage was comfortable and very nice to return to after a day exploring the surrounding area, we loved having the extensive park in which to walk the dogs.....the peace and tranquility absolutely lovely. We hope to return in the future as there is so much more we would like to do and where better than Mellerstain would we stay!
