• About Courtyard Cottage

The 200 acres of glorious parkland surrounding Mellerstain House, one of Scotland’s grandest stately homes, designed and built by William and Robert Adam, provide a wonderful setting for these two delightful cottages (S4568 & S4569). Visitors are welcome to roam the grounds including the fabulous Italian-style terraced gardens which command panoramic views over the lake to the distant Cheviot Hills. The scenic and historic attractions of the Border country are all close at hand and the beaches of Berwick and Holy Island are also easily accessible. Kelso (6 miles) offers shops, inns and restaurants and is home of Floors Castle and the famous Kelso Horse Races, whilst Edinburgh, with its magnificent castle, museums, galleries and excellent shopping, is only a 35 mile drive. Fly fishing can be arranged locally, several golf courses are nearby and shops and pubs are just 3.5 miles away. Beautifully appointed and very comfortable, these two properties offer a unique holiday opportunity. Clock House, ref S4568, has been beautifully converted to a high standard to form part of the Old Clock House dating from the early 18th century. Adjoining the Clock House is Courtyard Cottage, ref S4569, which has also been lovingly converted to a high standard and boasts three en-suite bedrooms. The courtyard coffee shop serves delicious home cooking on ‘house open’ days - and special occasions, large and small can be catered for by arrangement in the state rooms of Mellerstain House. The cottage in the courtyard next to Mellerstain house is ideal for families. We had a marvellous time wandering around the grounds in this lovely part of the world. We were made very welcome by both the owners and staff. The cottage is very warm and cosy. We liked both Kelso and Melrose locally. It is also close to Edinburgh and the Northumberland coast.

The cottage is beautifully situated in the grounds of Mellerstain House and I can honestly offer no criticism of the property itself - it is clean, well laid out, comfortable and above all spacious. I would like to add that the grounds of the house are beautiful and well kept - even in the rain the walk around the grounds was pleasant and peaceful and without disappointment. Be back soon......

We loved the setting and the surrounding gardens. The cottage was ideal for our group although the kitchen was not a good layout for cooking a meal for six. We could have done with a facility to dry clothes, perhaps a tumble dryer. In spite of that we had a great week and have recommended it to others. We hope to have a return visit.

Cottage is in a beautiful location. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We must thank owners of the Mellerstain House for their hard work in maintaining the house and gardens.

A very peaceful location at Mellerstain House, one of the great Adam houses. Kelso is fairly close and it makes a good base for discovering the Border country. Our only complaint was that there is no shower in the main bathroom, only a bath. A shower fitted above the bath would be a worthwhile investment.
