A cosy cottage on a small, peaceful holiday development on the outskirts of Whitby. Keel Cottage provides an excellent base for couples and families wanting to explore the North Yorks Moors National Park and the pretty seaside villages of the Yorkshire Coast. Keel Cottage has three bedrooms, and the living/dining area has sliding doors onto a sunny patio with a picnic bench for an al fresco breakfast or an evening drink. The cottage has lovely views over open countryside to the moors beyond. The steam trains on the North York Moors Railway pass along the riverside just at the bottom of the valley. Take a trip on the train and enjoy the market town of Pickering or stop off in Goathland, better known by many as ‘Aidensfield’, the fictional village of the TV series ‘Heartbeat’ and familiar to many as ‘Hogsmeade’ station in the early Harry Potter films.

Guests of Keel Cottage have free use of the small indoor swimming pool, and within the well-kept landscaped grounds there is plenty of green space, two small playgrounds and picnic tables with gas barbecues are provided from Easter to October. You can walk down through the complex to stand beneath the viaduct and there is plenty of wildlife in the area ranging from a cheeky seal, to heron and ducks. The cottage is some 200 yards from the ‘Cinder Track’, the old railway line running 20 miles between Whitby and Scarborough which is used extensively by walkers and cyclists. A 20-minute walk across the impressive viaduct with its views down the river will take you to the centre of Whitby with its welcoming tea rooms, a host of restaurants and quirky shops.

Whitby is host to many festivals during the course of the year, welcoming Goths and Steampunks and it has its own Regatta. The town also welcomes musicians from around the world to the fabulous MusicPort Festival and the Summer Folk Week. Walk in the steps of Bram Stoker, author of Dracula, as you climb up the 199 steps to the iconic ruin that is Whitby Abbey and enjoy spectacular views across the town towards the moors and out to sea. The sandy beach to the west of the town with its sea front promenade and colourful beach huts stretches 2 miles to the pretty village of Sandsend. In the early autumn the surrounding moors turn purple as the heather blooms and there is nothing nicer than a stroll through one of the moorland villages. Around 6 miles away is the thriving village of Robin Hoods Bay with its narrow streets full of smugglers tales, ghostly goings on and with a beach perfect for rock pooling. Fishing and golf can be found nearby. Beach 2 miles. Shop ½ mile, pub and restaurant 1 mile.

Although these properties are approximately 25 yards apart, Keel Cottage (ref CC243095) can be booked together with Capstan Cottage (ref UK2335) to accommodate up to 12 guests.

We had a brilliant week's break (2 adults and 2 children). The welcome pack from the owner was a lovely touch. The cottage was comfortable, well equipped, clean and warm. The location was ideal; close enough to walk into Whitby and go exploring in the surrounding area. We used the pool alot, the only thing I'd suggest is warmer showers in the changing room, but the cottage was close enough to head back for a shower so not a major issue. As the cottage is located near water I did find that I was bitten a few times. I'd probably bring a couple of plug ins next time, just in case.

The owner was extremely generous in leaving gifts/supplies for our arrival. Very kind gesture and a pleasant start to our break. We would recommend the walk into Whitby (about 30mins). Would definitely recommend.

This was a last minute holiday just for 2 but the house has 3 bedrooms. Upstairs is a double with a comfortable double bed, a double with 2 single beds and a bathroom with shower over bath, a sink and toilet. Downstairs is a lounge diner, 6 place dining table and 2 three seat sofas and a single chair. Also downstairs is a further double bedroom with 2 single beds. The kitchen is small and compact but is fully stocked with all equipment needed. The heating is by storage heaters and all work very well, very cosy. The bathroom has a wall fitted blower fan heater but plans for a heated towel rail is in the works. There is a good sized HD tv with Humax player giving plenty of channel choice. Outside is a picnic table with bench seating and a separate wooden bench accessed by the patio doors off the lounge. There is a designated numbered parking space with the property approx 30 feet from the patio door. The views are good from the property, open fields and the moors in the distance from the rear. A short walk to a wonderful Victorian viaduct now a footpath just up the hill with great views of the Abbey and the NYH Railway which passes below it. There is an onsite swimming pool but we did not us it but apparently you pay a refundable £5 for a key to get in which is returned at the end of your stay. There are small play areas for children and the grounds are very well kept. There's a Sainsburys supermarket just a few minutes drive away which also has a petrol station. You can walk to Whitby harbour in around 20 minutes but it is all down hill so be prepared. Overall we had a very nice stay and would happily return to this house and site again.
