The property has taken its name from the rock ptarmigan which is a medium-sized gamebird in the grouse family. The ptarmigan undergo seasonal changes of plumage, from white against winter snowfields to grey or brown, with barring, in spring and summer against tundra vegetation and can be seen on Cairngorm Mountain, or you can see a photo of a ptarmigan on the main feature wall in Ptarmigan Cottage.
