Set within the National Park just four miles from Otterburn, this Grade II listed bastle, or fortified house, was built in the 1580s to defend its inhabitants from the attacks of the Border Reivers. It has has been converted into a quirky holiday cottage and is situated inside the Bremenium Roman Fort, itself built on an Iron Age site, surrounded by evidence of its Roman past, including the visible remains of the gates to the fort, Roman crematoria on Dere Street and grassy outlines of buildings beneath. Today it provides a simple, peaceful, cosy retreat in north west Northumberland, and several rivers and streams are within an easy walk. The area is a designated Dark Sky Park making this an idyllic retreat for stargazers or astronomers.
The Scottish border and northern stretch of the Pennine Way are just six miles away across moors. It makes an ideal base from which to explore the Borders, Jedburgh 30 minutes, the Coquet valley and Cheviot Hills, Coquetdale 20 minutes, the Elsdon Valley and Simonside Hills, Rothbury 30 minutes, the North Tyne Valley, Bellingham 20 minutes, Hadrian’s Wall and Tynedale. 30 minutes to the south. Kielder Forest is 10 minutes away, with Kielder Water 45 minutes’ drive, ideal for sailors, mountain-bikers and birdwatchers (ospreys nest annually). Nearby tourist attractions also include National Trust properties at Wallington and Cragside, Roman forts and museums at Chesters, Corbridge, Housesteads and Vindolanda and the intriguing gardens of Belsay Hall and Alnwick Castle. The glorious Northumbrian coast makes a wonderful day out and a trip to the Farne Islands can be taken to see the seals and wildlife.

Yes, we would definitely recommend Rose Cottage and, indeed, have already done so to our friends. The setting is wonderful; the cottage delightful; and the area stunning. The cottage was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. We enjoyed cosy evenings in front of the wood-burning stove, watching some of the hundreds of DVD movies on the "big screen", and didn't miss the TV at all. The cottage is very well-equipped and beautifully presented. It was no surprise to find the visitors' book full of lavish praise

Lovely little cottage. Decorated and finished to a high standard with all equipment necessary in the kitchen and bathroom. Prefect location to see the stars and for walking over the countryside. Plenty to do in the area although you need to travel to most places. Very isolated and very peaceful. However local amenities are sparse due to the location for a dark sky park. Heating, for upstairs, is from a solid fuel Rayburn - which is quite a skill to keep going, but heating is supplemented downstairs by under floor heating and a log fire in the lounge. Hot water is supplemented by an immersion heater and electric shower.

Lovely cosy cottage in a beautiful remote location, very friendly and helpful neighbours and nice welcome package of cookies and wine which were greatly appreciated after a long journey. Cottage had everything we needed and would highly recommend for a peaceful break and getting away from it all!

Really lovely cottage, clean and well equipped. Pub serving good food in Otterburn (and ok though not great food at the close pub). Minor issues which we fully accept are the pay off for the remoteness (low water pressure making the shower very difficult to use and heating not entirely straightforward - we didn't try to use the Rayburn, which would have provided heating, but we're ok with portable heaters and log burner as needed. It's not that cold yet). There is loads more to do in the area than we got round to, and it would be great with a bike another time.
