Situated in the grounds of Seaton Hall, a working farm. Steeped in history, this former shepherds cottage fell into dilapidation but is now restored and renovated into a charming self catering cottage. Originally a 13th Century Benedictine nunnery Seaton Hall was demolished by Henry VIII under the dissolution of the monasteries and rebuilt in the 16th Century. One gable end of the monastery survives to this day and is a scheduled ancient monument. There are footpaths through the grounds to walk the dog, with more great walking in Eskdale and Wasdale. Within a two mile radius you will discover Bootle village, with shop, Millstones cafe, The Brown Cow pub and a sand and shingle beach. Local visitor attractions include ’La’al Ratty’ miniature railway, Muncaster Castle, a wildlife Park and Hodbarrow Nature Reserve. The picturesque villages of Broughton in Furness and Ravenglass are nearby, each have a selection of pubs, cafes and restaurants. You can hop on the train at Bootle Station and enjoy the beautiful coastal trip to the historic port of Whitehaven.

A secluded stunning cottage in the heart of the country and with plenty of wildlife but no distance from so many attractions. Log fire, a lovely and spacious interior and immaculately maintained.

We had a fabulous time at Shepherds Cottage. It is very cosy, immaculate and perfectly organised. The hosts even prepared milk and basic supplies. We spent 4 nights and would have loved to stay longer had we not had to go back to work. Could not recommend more.

The most perfect place for peace and quiet, perfect hosts, there when you need them. Superb scenery , farm animals galore, we came home completely rested . We cannot recommend this home from home enough. The local shop, about 5 minutes drive stocks everything you would need, pleasant staff. The stream running past the cottage was a delight to listen to.

This is a lovely cottage, set in the middle of farmland. The owners are welcoming but unobtrusive so let you get on with your holiday. Lovely little welcome pack on arrival, all important milk and tea! Couldn't fault the cottage one bit at all, everything was perfect and we had a great family holiday even in February. Be aware that the cottage isn't near shops, etc (As you'd expect really) so remember to bring food or whatever you need for first day, we always do that so that was perfect for us. As you'd expect, phone signal is patchy. For us, EE got a phone signal and an edge data connection (4G outside), 3mobile had nothing at all, so just be aware if you expect to go online to check your plans, etc! I'd not say that's a negative, it's good for the family to not use technology for a change! Thank you to the owners and we'll see you again soon.

We thoroughly enjoyed our two week stay at Shepherds Cottage. We’re a family of three (our daughter turned 9 during our visit), and we found the cottage to be the perfect base for our first visit to the Lake District. Highlights for us: the sound of the river out the windows (especially at night), the working farm and rural setting (but still within easy drive of amenities and beautiful lake and waterfall walks), and the warm and cosy cottage. The owners were friendly and accommodating, and the star-gazing was phenomenal. For an away-from-it-all holiday, we’d highly recommend Shepherds Cottage.
