The Gap is an attractive, stone-built cottage nestled around ½ mile from the peaceful coastal village of Boulmer. This property is divine. Oozing charm and character, there are many beautiful features ensuring the cottage offers a relaxing holiday retreat. Sitting at the roadside of a small terrace of three, The Gap enjoys privacy with its own independent access. There is a gorgeous wood burner in the living room, making this a suitable choice regardless of the season, and French doors leading to the garden enhance its natural light. The kitchen/dining room with its lovely slate flooring has good quality appliances. Two of the bedrooms and the family bathroom are conveniently on the ground floor too. An open staircase leads from the central hallway to the first floor where the master bedroom boasts en-suite shower facilities. There is the added bonus of a snug/second living room on the first floor with a large window making the most of the glorious views across open farmland towards the sea as a back drop. The large garden is mainly laid to lawn and there is storage for bicycles available; particularly suitable for those cyclists who enjoy the challenge of the National Cycle Route 1, which The Gap is situated on.

Boulmer (pronounced Boomer) is a pretty coastal village with very little through traffic. Once the haunt of smugglers, it is one of the true Northumbrian fishing villages which remains virtually untouched by time. Meander along the water’s edge and watch the fishermen return with their daily catch of lobsters, crabs and salmon. The picture perfect seaside village of Alnmouth is less than a 3-mile stroll along the coastline and where there are pubs, shops and tea rooms available. There are two golf courses here too.

A short drive inland brings you to the historic market town of Alnwick where there is a wider array of facilities available. Visitors will enjoy a trip to Alnwick Garden with its grand cascade waterfall and tree house restaurant. Alnwick Castle, home to the Duke of Northumberland and film set for Harry Potter’s Hogwarts, is well worth a visit. The Gap is a superb choice for those seeking stylish self-catering accommodation conveniently situated only a gentle stroll from the seashore of the beautiful Northumbrian coastline which is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Beach ½ mile. Shop 3 miles, pub and restaurant ½ mile.

We had a great holiday at The Gap as a family of four. The cottage is remarkably spacious, nicely laid out and well-equipped. We visited in August, so I can't comment on how cosy it would be in cold weather, but there is both central heating and a log burner so I imagine it would be comfortable any time of year. A particularly nice feature is the huge kitchen-dining room, which opens up onto a large patio and deck, if it's sunny. This was our first trip to Northumbria, and I have to say it was beautiful, and so much less crowded and busy compared to, say, Cornwall. The beaches are clean and sandy, and there's great walking along the coastal path. Lots of castles too! Holy Island, where Lindisfarne Priory and Lindisfarne Castle are located, is a short drive away (but do remember to check tide times!) Things to be aware of in the cottage: the upstairs sitting room, and the upstairs bedroom with the en-suite, are attic rooms. Away from the centre of the room, the roof gets a bit low, so taller people (I'm 1.95m) do have to stoop to avoid banging your head! (On the plus side, the Velux windows in the roof make a lovely sound when it's raining!) Also there are a number of steps inside the cottage, even on the ground floor. This would make life harder for wheelchair users or folks with less mobility. Overall, we had a very nice holiday, and would be happy to go back to Northumbria and to The Gap.
