The Old Reading Room is a detached stone built cottage situated right in the heart of the picture postcard coastal village of Bamburgh. Tucked up a small, private lane, this quaint property was built in the early 1800s and originally used as an infant school. It then became the reading room for the village and finally a doctor’s surgery. The Old Reading Room now provides self catering holiday accommodation where restaurants, tea rooms, shops and pubs are all a mere gentle stroll away. Visit the interesting Grace darling Museum close by or amble down to the glorious expanse of golden sands only a few minute’s walk from The Old Reading Room.

The reading room is in a good position for all amenities and beautiful beaches. It has a lovely little court yard but the property is in need of some modernisation and maintenance.

The Old Reading Room is in an excellent location for exploring Northumberland, with the bonus of being within yards of Bamburgh's beautiful beach. It is clean and comfortable and the new heating system an improvement on the old. One minor point for improvement would be to provide additional towels per guest/a heated towel rail. Sadly Bamburgh now has limited amenities in terms of shops to buy day-to-day items e.g. bread, milk, veg., newspapers. The Copper Kettle is a characterful olde-worlde tearoom and The Potted Lobster offers varied fish and seafood dishes.

A lovely week in Bamburgh and a lovely cottage, too.

While the Old Reading Room was a tad worn (hence the 9 for overall rating), it was perfectly comfortable and clean. The heating worked well , the water was piping hot, the beds and sitting room comfortable and the kitchen well equipped. One of the rings on the cooker didn't appear to work, but that was not a problem at all. We have been staying in Bamburgh each May for many years now, and we liked the central position of the Old Reading Room very much. The builders commenced work on the old school while we were there, but caused us no inconvenience at all, and finished work at 4 pm so the evening were quiet. We will certainly try to book again for next year.

Good location Well equipped kitchen The property was not clean, particularly the bathroom and bedrooms. And the whole property seemed dated, could do with some modernisation. Uncomfortable heating system - either too hot or too cold with single glazed windows. Very thin curtains which was difficult with a small baby.

We really like the Old Reading Room and will definitely stay there again. It is very reasonably priced and excellently located. It's decor is a bit dated but all in all its clean and comfortable and we managed to keep cosy and warm.
