The Old Stone House, dating back to the 17th century, was originally a stone cutter’s yard, and later a police station. The kitchen is believed to be the original police cell. The property has recently been refurbished in 2022 within keeping of the original features. You can see this from the exposed beams, open fireplaces, and stonework which have been expertly renovated back to their former glory. On a clear day, there are views across Ballard down all the way to the Isle of Wight.
Outside is somewhere you will spend a lot of time, the evening sun giving you a beautiful place to sit and relax after a day exploring. There is a museum in Swanage with information on the history of the town including the Jurassic Coast, dinosaurs and the second world war; there is certainly something for all the family to be interested in. Swanage has a train station with a steam train which can take you to Corfe Castle, a beautiful town with the ruins of a 1000-year-old castle which is a National Trust site.
If you want to connect with the outdoors you can walk along the sandy beaches in Swanage or the National Trust Nature Reserve at Studlands or along the southwest coastal path on the Jurassic Coast. Perhaps a day trip to Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door for spectacular scenery or visit Durlston Country Park and National Nature Reserve where you can also visit Durlston Castle an extraordinary Victorian building with ever changing exhibitions inside. For the thrill seekers you can book trips to go out on the water including sea fishing, diving or coasteering. A great way to explore the Purbecks is by bike, Rempstone Ride offers a 12mile, off road track suitable for all the family, Cross via pool harbour ferry, there are cycle tracks all along the coast.
