Porthmadog is a busy harbour town, originally named Portmadoc until 1974 and locally as ’Port’. Porthmadog is a Welsh coastal town and community in the Eifionydd area of Gwynedd and the historic county of Caernarfonshire. Porthmadog is home to the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Steam Railway which is the UK’s longest heritage railway and runs 25 miles, a must visit for families and rail enthusiasts alike.

You are within easy reach of Black Rock Sands where you’ll find miles of sweeping sands and dunes. Black Rock Sands is an open, wide beach with fine sands, the name comes from the area to the west of the beach dominated by a feature of the local sand dune. Portmeirion, is also an easy reach where you can find a unique and enchanting Italian-style village which is filled with lots of things to explore.

A short drive down the coast is Harlech with its imposing UNESCO World Heritage castle, an extensive beach and you can even have a self-guided tour in the slate caverns, the caverns have stayed as the miners left them, built over 100 years ago you can even see the scars in the rock made by the miner’s tools. A short drive inland is Blaenau Ffestiniog, an adrenaline junkie’s delight with Zip World, the largest zip wire zone in the world, Bounce Below, where you can bounce on trampoline nets deep underground in an old slate cavern, and the Stiniog downhill mountain bike trails. The area has something for everyone of all ages, from scenic walking routes, bike trails, to a whole host of water sports on offer. It really is a diverse area to explore.
