Windy Nook is situated in the heart of the picturesque village of Pooley Bridge on the north eastern edge of Ullswater one of the Lake Districts most attractive lakes at the point where the River Eamont and Ullswater meet. The 16th century bridge over the Eamont gives the village its name and offers beautiful views of the lake and the neighbouring fells. The village and the surrounding area are also of historical interest. Dunmallard Hill adjacent to the village was the site of an Iron Age Fort and is one of a number of ancient sites dotted around the locality. The village has three good quality pubs which serve food together with tea rooms and a small number of shops providing essentials from groceries and outdoor equipment to souvenirs. The Ullswater steamers also depart from here providing trips along the seven mile lake to Howtown and Glenridding. \nThe area around the village abounds with stunningly beautiful walks offering a variety of terrain and duration. Visitors can enjoy walks around Ullswater the second largest lake in the Lake District National Park or through woodland or along the river. The dramatic waterfall Aira Force is situated about half way along the lake between Pooley Bridge and Glenridding and for more challenging expeditions the lake is bordered by the mountain ranges of High Street and Helvellyn. \nPenrith located at junction 40 of the M6 is approximately five miles from the village and is the nearest town providing access to a railway station the local hospital as well as banks shops and supermarkets. The market town of Keswick is also within easy travelling distance at approximately 20 miles from the village. " https://img.chooseacottage.co.uk/Property/137/840/1377418.jpg CC118109

Great cottage, one of the best we have ever stayed in. Very comfortable and well equipped. We were grateful to the owners for allowing us to take our cat with us. We felt very welcome in The Crown and wished that we had booked to have Christmas Day lunch there. We also loved the shop directly next door to the cottage. Overall we had a lovely Christmas in Windy Book and we would definitely be happy to stay there again.

We had a lovely holiday at Windy Nook. The cottage was well equipped, warm and comfortable. Pooley Bridge has a good choice of pubs and interesting shops. We went for lovely walks nearby without travelling far.

Only issue was the steep stairs, both of us nearly slipped down them.

Windy Nook is a gorgeous and spotlessly clean cottage right in the centre of Pooley Bridge. It could not be more well placed. It is very well equipped and extremely comfortable. A real home from home. I would have scored it 10 across the board but for a couple of things (which I knew before I booked so not a surprise but worth considering if these things are important to you). Firstly is that like many village based cottages there is no allocated parking, while in most cases not a problem it is very difficult to park free of charge in the village. It is a busy and popular place. We managed to park on the square (moving the car from one of the pay car parks) in late afternoon on our first day, and then did not move the car for as long as possible! Secondly there is no outside space to sit a relax. Again, there are options, mostly the beer garden or sun terrace at the Crown pub (virtually next door) which is a sun trap so not a bad place to be. There are two shops for buying essentials and other food items - the local shop / post office and Chesnut house (actually next door!) which is a more specialist food / drink retailer with a massive selection of gin. We managed quite happily for the week either eating at the 3 dog friendly pubs, the dog friendly cafe (Granny Dowbekins) or catering simply at home with provisions from the shops. Do try the ice-cream from the local post office - they are amazing (I had the cherry and the jaffa cake flavours but there are many to choose from!). The pubs are just that - pubs, mainly catering for the hoards of family campers based around the village campsites. They are not gastro-pubs but the food was pretty good. One or two things could have been better but overall we ate pretty well. We didn't try the more upmarket restaurant as its not dog friendly, but friends of ours have been and told us it was very good. The walking options from the cottage are brilliant. We walked from 6-14 miles every day, sometimes a circular walk from the cottage, other times taking the steamer to across the lake and walking back. either way we managed the entire path around the lake in chunks over 3 days. We also walked out to Lowther Castle, up to the Wainwright stone and across to Dalemain historic house. All good walks and highly recommended. Overall a fantastic holiday. Would recommend as a destination.

Lovely quiet cottage with comfy beds and super bathrooms. The village of Pooley Bridge is a little bit of a nightmare for parking though if you're used to staying in places with on-site parking. There's a lot of traffic passing through so if you decide to drive somewhere for the day then beware that parking near the cottage when you get back can prove challenging... The Sun Inn & The 1863 Bistro were great for food. The Crown Inn & The Pooley Bridge Inn were adequate.
