The Old Chapel is centrally located in the pretty village of Burneston with a post office and a pub within very easy walking distance, and just three miles south of the market town of Bedale. It was built in 1859 as a Wesleyan Chapel, and used for regular services until the early 1960s. Before its restoration by the present owners, it has been used for art exhibitions, as a games room and even stabling for cattle!
The property has been cleverly designed and lovingly converted to provide accommodation of a very good standard for couples or small families. Full of character you would expect of a chapel conversion, it offers up-to-date comforts with oil central heating, underfloor heating to the ground floor, and the added benefit of a cosy wood burner in the living room.
Conveniently located between the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors National Parks, there is easy access to the A1 making it convenient to venture further afield. To the south is the historic walled city of York with its famous minster, museums, cobbled alleyways and independent shops. The spa town of Harrogate should not be missed, where a visit to the popular Betty’s Tea Room is a must. For horse racing enthusiasts, there are race courses at Catterick, Thirsk, York and Wetherby.
The area is peppered with traditional market towns including Ripon, Leyburn and Thirsk. Bedale has a wide high street with a few shops, and shopaholics will love Northallerton, again with its wide high street and shops aplenty. There are many castles to explore, including Bolton Castle, Richmond, Helmsley and Pickering. For a family day out, don’t miss the Forbidden Corner at Leyburn, with mysterious tunnels and chambers, and surprises at every turn. Lightwater Valley theme park is almost on your doorstep, and provides rides and attractions for fun seekers of all ages.
There are also many National Trust and English Heritage properties to visit including Rievaulx Abbey, Fountains Abbey, Byland Abbey, Newby Hall and Gardens, and privately owned Jervaulx Abbey and Thorp Perrow Aboretum. For more scenic days out, head west to the Yorkshire Dales and take in the stunning scenery, or to the east you will find the wilderness of the Yorkshire Moors. Don’t miss the spectacular Brimham Rocks, also National Trust owned, with unique and amazing granite rock formations, or the Druids Temple, a Victorian folly near Masham, which is also home to Theakstons Brewery.
After a busy day exploring, the property makes a comfortable, welcoming retreat to come home to. Why not relax on the patio with a glass of your favourite tipple? With so much to do in and around this area, you’ll be sure to return. Shop 3 miles, pub 50 yards, restaurant 1 mile.
