The Northumberland Coast is adorned with golden sandy beaches, inviting you to take romantic strolls, build sandcastles, explore rock pools and try thrilling watersports. Take an island boat trip from Seahouses, play in the dunes on Alnmouth Beach, snorkel around Beadnell Bay or enjoy a picnic on Bamburgh Beach. Traditional seaside towns and villages like Berwick-upon-Tweed, Spittal and Craster offer pretty streets, welcoming eateries and breathtaking views. If you’re interested in fossil hunting, head to the coastal village of Howick, which is known for its ancient forest remnants and marine remains.
The Northumberland Coast is home to a rich variety of wildlife, thanks to its diverse ecosystems and protected conservation areas. From the quintessential fishing village of Seahouses, take a boat to The Farne Islands, a group of 20 islands renowned for the large seabird colonies of puffins, guillemots, razorbills and terns. You can also see one of England's largest colonies of Atlantic grey seals here. Other nature reserves popular for birdwatching and walking include Druridge Bay Country Park and the tidal island of Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve, or “Holy Island” as it’s also known.
Bamburgh Castle, with its majestic position overlooking the North Sea, is undoubtedly one of the most popular historic sites on the Northumberland Coast, but there are plenty more to explore on your seaside escape. Visit the 16th-century fortress of Lindisfarne Castle, wander the riverside ruins of Edlingham Castle or walk in Harry Potter’s footsteps at medieval Alnwick Castle. There are also countless ancient sites to discover, from Iron Age hillforts and Viking settlements to prehistoric rock carvings and Roman forts.
