This picturesque trail begins at the ruins of Hemyock Castle in Devon, in the north of the Blackdown Hills. As you follow the route, you’ll take in the beautiful scenery of the Culm Valley on your way to Culmstock Beacon, a historic signal point that today offers incredible hilltop views of the surrounding countryside. These are arguably some of the best views in the Blackdown Hills. The villages of Hemyock and Culmstock are both worth a visit, with their historic streets and cosy pubs.
The Wellington Monument is a towering stone column near the village of Wellington in Somerset, dedicated to the Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley, and his military achievements. It’s a notable landmark in the Blackdown Hills and this circular walk allows you to appreciate it from different viewpoints as you traverse through pretty woodlands and open fields. The monument’s position on the Blackdown Ridge gives you some impressive vistas of the enchanting landscape.
This serene lakeside walk takes you around not one, but two picturesque lakes, as you explore woodland and take in tranquil views. Otterhead Lakes is a popular spot for wildlife watching and, if you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the elusive otters which the lakes are named after. The peaceful setting here is perfect for a romantic stroll or a leisurely picnic, surrounded by nature. Nearby, the delightful village of Churchinford has a cosy pub you can pop into after your walk.
