The iconic Cheddar Gorge is one of the most visited attractions in the Mendip Hills and is the largest gorge in the UK. As a natural wonder that appeals to all ages, this is a popular tourist destination whether you’re on a family holiday, a couple’s getaway or a trip away with friends. Discover the secret caverns and ancient chambers inside the gorge, climb Jacob’s Ladder for views across the hills or try your hand at rock climbing on the awe-inspiring cliffs.
The scenic West Mendip Way winds through the Mendip Hills for approximately 30 miles, from the historic city of Wells right up to the coastal town of Weston-super-Mare. The route takes you past Bleadon Hill, Loxton, Wavering Down, Shipham, Cheddar, Priddy and Wookey Hole. As you traverse the steep limestone ridges and deep gorges, stop off in these pretty towns and villages to visit popular attractions and sample local delicacies like Somerset cheese and cider.
Nestled at the foot of the Mendip Hills, Wells is affectionately known as England’s smallest city, a status granted to it in 1205 when its iconic cathedral was built. Wells Cathedral is no doubt the city’s biggest draw, with its intricate sculptures, elaborate carvings and stunning stained-glass windows. Elsewhere, you can discover local history at Wells Museum, hunt for local produce and artisanal goods in the market square, or pop into the pretty shops, cafes and restaurants that line the medieval cobbled streets.
