Located on the stunning Somerset coast, the charming harbour town of Watchet is a lovely spot for a peaceful holiday by the sea, whilst still giving you easy access to a range of nearby attractions and activities in the local area. Start by exploring Watchet Harbour, the heart of the town. It's a delightful place to simply stroll along the waterfront, admiring the colourful fishing boats and taking in great views of the Bristol Channel. Near the harbour you'll also find the pebble shores of Watchet Beach, a dog-friendly beach that's perfect for enjoying scenic strolls and sea views - you can even glimpse the South Wales coastline on a clear day. The coastline near Watchet is dotted with secluded beaches and coves, like the fossil-rich cliffs of Kilve Beach, the clear waters of Blue Anchor Bay and the sandy shores of Dunster Beach. We have a range of holiday homes along this beautiful stretch of the Somerset coast, from cosy cottages with sea views to luxury lodges just a short walk from the beach. If you're visiting the area on a family holiday with the kids, consider booking a Watchet holiday park where you can make the most of onsite facilities like an indoor pool and children's play area. We've also got a great choice of dog-friendly holidays in Somerset if your pooch loves the beach too!
Watchet is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, with a stunning stretch of coastline and beautiful countryside right on its doorstep. Perched on the Somerset coast between the Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Exmoor National Park, walkers and cyclists are spoilt for choice when it comes to scenic trails and pathways. There's also no need to venture out of Watchet to discover incredible walking routes, as the South West Coast Path passes directly through the town. Suitable for leisurely strolls or challenging hikes, you can follow the iconic trail along rugged cliffs and past secluded coves, visiting nearby villages such as Blue Anchor and St. Audries Bay. Head out to explore the town and its beautiful surroundings, then head back to your Watchet accommodation to relax in comfort in your home away from home.
The name "Watchet" is believed to have Celtic origins, meaning "lookout" or "watch place" - reflecting the town's strategic location overlooking the Bristol Channel. Once a medieval port, Watchet has a proud maritime legacy, immortalised in the poem "The Ancient Mariner" by poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge who lived in nearby Nether Stowey. The Watchet Museum is a treasure trove of local history and heritage, where you can learn more about the town's maritime history, as well as its industrial heritage and cultural legacy. Admire historic landmarks around town, like the iconic Lighthouse Tower, the 19th-century Market House and the striking St. Decuman's Church, or head further along the coast to visit sites like Dunster Castle and Cleeve Abbey. You can also hop aboard the West Somerset Railway at Watchet and enjoy a nostalgic ride through the Somerset countryside. If you're visiting for a relaxing weekend away with your partner, then check out our hot tub breaks in Somerset or consider going glamping in the South West!
