Planning your holiday in the Lake District

          When to visit

The Lake District is much adored for its magical landscapes, and whilst the scenery here is incredible at any time of year, each season brings its own unique beauty and appeal. Visit in spring to see the landscapes re-awakening, bursting to life with daffodils, bluebells and blossoming trees. Summer is undoubtedly one of the most popular times to visit the Lake District, with pretty boats out on the water, pub gardens filling up fast and clearer views from the top of the fells. In Autumn, the dramatic colours and intense sunsets provide the perfect backdrop for scenic hikes in the fells or along the lake shores. Winter is also a lovely time to visit the Lake District, with cosy tea rooms and roaring fires offering a welcome retreat from the colder temperatures. You could also book one of our hot tub lodges in the Lake District for an extra treat! Be mindful that this time of year often brings harsh conditions, and hiking in the fells should only be undertaken by experienced and well-prepared hikers. Instead, you could consider lower-level circuits like Buttermere or Tarn Hows.

          What to pack

Like any destination, packing for the Lake District will depend on what time of year you're visiting, and what you plan on doing while you're there. Regardless of whether you're visiting in the depth of winter or the height of summer, it's wise to pack waterproofs and plenty of layers. This will mean you're covered for all eventualities, whether you're heading out for an evening boat ride on Lake Windermere or an early morning hike up Helvellyn. Of course, if you're planning some strenuous hikes or to get involved with watersports, you will need to bring the appropriate gear (although for certain activities, you may be able to hire it there). Don't worry if you forget something - there are plenty of shops in the main towns selling outdoor clothing and equipment if you do get caught short. If you're booking our dog-friendly accommodation in the Lake District, don't forget to pack for your pooch as well!

How to get around by public transport

As England's largest National Park, getting around in the Lake District may seem like a daunting task, especially if you don't have a car. Whilst it's ideal if you can drive at your leisure, the Lake District has a good bus network you can take advantage of, with regular buses to and from most of the main towns, villages and sightseeing spots, including Kendal, Keswick, Windermere and Grasmere. It's actually possible to do all of the Wainwrights by public transport! You can also travel around a lot of the Lake District by boat, with Windermere Lake Cruises, Ullswater Steamers and Keswick Launch all popular options for exploring by water.
